We Don’t Connect – Negotiations between Usability, User and Art Experience in Online Art Interaction
Art and its conceptualization enable a richer understanding of human computer interaction (HCI). User experience (UX), usability and art experience (AE) have extensive traditions of scholarship. UX and AE especially, have rarely been combined. While systematic approaches to identifying contrasts between the types of experience are lacking, there is also a lag in academic knowledge on how UX and AE relate to one another in the action context of HCI. This paper presents a study in which UX and perceived usability, were investigated in the context of online art experience. The study’s participants (N=128) responded to a questionnaire based on an adapted model of interactive art systems while experiencing an online art exhibition. Results revealed three significant correlations: 1) the impact of usability on the sense of immersion; 2) how immersion influenced the art experience; and 3) how the viewer’s background (skills and knowledge) affects art experience in digital spaces.©2022 International Conference on Information Systems Development.fi=vertaisarvioitu|en=peerReviewed

Informaatioteknologiasta saavutetut hyödyt ja niiden jakatuminen
Informaatioteknologialla on monenlaisia vaikutuksia yhteiskuntaan. Information technology has a variety of influences to the society. Many benefits have been predicted to outcome from information technology which will develop our societies further and improve people’s life quality. In some areas, information technology still has not been recognized as a part of the system of the society, and in some areas information technology is still missing completely from the countries’ infrastructure. Even though, the use of information technology and world wide web have been increasing, there are major differences in the access and skills in use within the users. This thesis studies the global polarized divide of information technology, digital divide and digital inequality. The aim is to answer the following questions: Is there a significant divide in the distribution of information technology and does everybody benefit from the use of it equally? The thesis is based on research material founded by researchers before, such as articles and studies from scientific journals and books. The economically developed countries have more efficient results in adopting and using information and communication technology. The least developed countries have the least efficient. This phenomenon has the chance to increase the gap between developed and least developed countries. Also, the differences between the people in the skills of efficient use of information technology create an unbalanced situation in the society. The digital inequality is in the same time the fault and the consequence for other inequalities in the society. Very often, those who are in the economically and socially disadvantaged position tend to be in the weakest group from the digital inequality point of view. Digital divide and inequality reflects the rest of the grievances in our societies
Art experience in digital interactive technology
teknologialla on taidekokemukseen. Tutkielman empiiristä osaa edeltää
aiheeseen liittyvää teoriaa käsittelevä kirjallisuuskatsaus, jossa tarkastellaan
tähänastisen tutkimuksen kokonaiskuvaa digitaalisen interaktiivisen
teknologian käytöstä, taidekokemuksesta ja digitaalisen interaktiivisen taiteen
ulottuvuuksia. Tutkimusosiossa tutkittiin osallistujien kokemuksia kolmen eri
virtuaalisen taidenäyttelyyn osallistumisesta. Tutkimusdata kerättiin 128
vastaajalta verkkokyselyn muodossa. Tutkimuksessa käytettiin selitettävänä
muuttujana taidekokemusta, jonka selittävinä muuttujina tutkittiin teknologian
kautta koettuun taidekokemukseen. Yhteensä tutkimusmalli ja valitut
muuttujat selittivät 54,5 % (R²=0,545) taidekokemusta mittaavien muuttujien
vaihtelusta.Digitally implemented interactive services are common in all areas today.
Digital and interactive solutions are increasing in the presentation of art and
thus also in cultural institutions. Information technology, software design,
digital art, and the art experience include similar areas of research, but
challenges can be seen in the development of common interactive solutions for
these. Technological solutions are evolving in the field of art, but research on
the subject is clearly scarce. This study seeks to explore the relationship
between technological design and art and the implications of digital interactive
technology for the art experience. The empirical part of the thesis is preceded by
a review of the literature on related theory, which examines the overall picture
of the use of digital interactive technology, art experience and the dimensions of
digital interactive art. The empirical research section examined participants
experiences of participating in three different virtual art exhibitions. Survey
data was collected from 128 respondents in the form of an online survey. The
analysis was executed having art experience as an explanatory variable and the
usability of the technology, experienced immersion, and negative emotional
response as explanatory variables. The research data were analysed using
regression analysis of the SPSS program and traditional perceptual methods of
qualitative data. The results showed that the most significant impact on the art
experience was the immersion experienced by the participants, which in turn
was most strongly influenced by the usability of the exhibition site. Thus, it was
found that the usability of the virtual art exhibition did not have a direct impact
on the art experience of the participants, but rather, impacted on immersion
that subsequently affected the art experience. In total, the research model and
the chosen explanatory variables explained 54.5% (R²=0,545) of the variation in
the art experience
Clouds over Hyytiälä, Finland : an algorithm to classify clouds based on solar radiation and cloud base height measurements
We developed a simple algorithm to classify clouds based on global radiation and cloud base height measured by pyranometer and ceilometer, respectively. We separated clouds into seven different classes (stratus, stratocumulus, cumulus, nimbostratus, altocumulus + altostratus, cirrus + cirrocumulus + cirrostratus and clear sky + cirrus). We also included classes for cumulus and cirrus clouds causing global radiation enhancement, and we classified multilayered clouds, when captured by the ceilometer, based on their height and characteristics (transmittance, patchiness and uniformity). The overall performance of the algorithm was nearly 70% when compared with classification by an observer using total-sky images. The performance was best for clouds having well-distinguishable effects on solar radiation: nimbostratus clouds were classified correctly in 100% of the cases. The worst performance corresponds to cirriform clouds (50 %). Although the overall performance of the algorithm was good, it is likely to miss the occurrences of high and multilayered clouds. This is due to the technical limits of the instrumentation: the vertical detection range of the ceilometer and occultation of the laser pulse by the lowest cloud layer. We examined the use of clearness index, which is defined as a ratio between measured global radiation and modeled radiation at the top of the atmosphere, as an indicator of clear-sky conditions. Our results show that cumulus, altocumulus, altostratus and cirriform clouds can be present when the index indicates clear-sky conditions. Those conditions have previously been associated with enhanced aerosol formation under clear skies. This is an important finding especially in the case of low clouds coupled to the surface, which can influence aerosol population via aerosol-cloud interactions. Overall, caution is required when the clearness index is used in the analysis of processes affected by partitioning of radiation by clouds.Peer reviewe
Damaging heterozygous mutations in NFKB1 lead to diverse immunologic phenotypes
Background: The nuclear factor kappa light-chain enhancer of activated B cells (NF-kappa B) signaling pathway is a key regulator of immune responses. Accordingly, mutations in several NF-kappa B pathway genes cause immunodeficiency. Objective: We sought to identify the cause of disease in 3 unrelated Finnish kindreds with variable symptoms of immunodeficiency and autoinflammation. Methods: We applied genetic linkage analysis and next-generation sequencing and functional analyses of NFKB1 and its mutated alleles. Results: In all affected subjects we detected novel heterozygous variants in NFKB1, encoding for p50/p105. Symptoms in variant carriers differed depending on the mutation. Patients harboring a p.I553M variant presented with antibody deficiency, infection susceptibility, and multiorgan autoimmunity. Patients with a p.H67R substitution had antibody deficiency and experienced autoinflammatory episodes, including aphthae, gastrointestinal disease, febrile attacks, and small-vessel vasculitis characteristic of Behc, et disease. Patients with a p.R157X stop-gain experienced hyperinflammatory responses to surgery and showed enhanced inflammasome activation. In functional analyses the p.R157X variant caused proteasome-dependent degradation of both the truncated and wild-type proteins, leading to a dramatic loss of p50/p105. The p.H67R variant reduced nuclear entry of p50 and showed decreased transcriptional activity in luciferase reporter assays. The p.I553M mutation in turn showed no change in p50 function but exhibited reduced p105 phosphorylation and stability. Affinity purification mass spectrometry also demonstrated that both missense variants led to altered protein-protein interactions. Conclusion: Our findings broaden the scope of phenotypes caused by mutations in NFKB1 and suggest that a subset of autoinflammatory diseases, such as Behcet disease, can be caused by rare monogenic variants in genes of the NF-kappa B pathway.Peer reviewe
